History of NCQHA

The NCQHA, established in 1963, and having over 500+ active members, recognizes the importance of the equine industry to residents of North Carolina and realizes the need to offer activities that appeal to a variety of horse    enthusiasts. With North Carolina being home to 225,000 horses valued at $500 Million dollars, our goal is to work together in generating growth of the affiliate membership and encourage participation through educationa programs, recreational riding and healthy competition. We take pride in knowing that our association is held in high regard by the American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) and other affiliates throughout the country which   we have been a model for not only for the promotion of the American Quarter Horse, but also for our fun, family- oriented atmosphere.

Below are just a few of our "Member Perks".

Shows

NCQHA Jamboree

AQHA sanctioned show that began 40 years ago and is now held in conjunction with the Tar Heel Triple Classic (TTC) which offers 10 full days of showing including the NCQHYA Youth Show, A Little Futurity and the NCQHA Jamboree. These shows are coupled with a "No Bling" All Novice Show, cattle events and returning this year, the over fences classes. The event draws exhibitors and horses from approximately 23 different states, including California, Texas, Florida and Ohio. A percentage of the proceeds raised benefits the Harriet Lynn Norris  Scholarship Fund which provides scholarships each year for deserving NCQHA individuals to further their education. In the last 34 years, 103 scholarships have been awarded for a total of $100,000.

"No Bling" Novice Show Circuit

NCQHA started a series of shows designed to encourage Novice competitors to "get their feet wet" showing their American Quarter Horses in an AQHA sanctioned show that is fun, low-key and designed to help them prepare for  participation at the larger AQHA Shows. The "No Bling" idea indicates a clean long sleeve shirt with a collar, jeans, a hat and boots (all that's required per the AQHA Rulebook) and no fancy tack is required. This "come as you are"  concept is seen as a positive step towards allowing all levels of riders to participate. AQHA has now asked affiliate   states to implement this program as well. Novice participation continues to grow. High Point awards are given to the top riders at the annual banquet held in January.

NCQHA Futurity

An AQHA sanctioned show that began in 1964 and is known as one of the best and largest futurities in the country. The show features special classes including those for the offspring of stallions purchased through our Annual NCQHA Stallion Auction and classes for NC residents only to encourage participation at the state level. Also offered are the new AQHA Green classes in Western Pleasure, Hunter under Saddle and more, a 3year old Reining   class and Novice Horse/Novice Rider classes which are gaining popularity throughout the country. Within the last 21 years the Futurity has boasted over 6,000 entries representing over 15 states paying out over $530,000 plus. A     percentage of proceeds generated provide year end awards to recognize owners and exhibitors at the annual awards banquet.

We offer a general membership meeting, dinner, award presentations to our year end class winners and all around exhibitors, and live entertainment.

NCQHA Trail Ride

Annual trail ride typically held in September in conjunction with the AQHA Ride Program. The ride draws approximately 60 participants from several states including North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee and Florida. Trail enthusiasts have the opportunity to enjoy miles of N.C. mountain trails with spectacular views. A  cookout is held with wonderful food and entertainment provided by a local band, and of course fun and fellowship with old and new friends. A percentage of the proceeds have been donated to the NCQHA Crisis Fund, the AQHA Foundation, Victory Junction Gang Camp and the Harriet Lynn Norris Scholarship Fund.

NCAQHA (North Carolina Amateur Quarter Horse Association)

NCQHYA (North Carolina Quarter Horse Youth Association)

A great group of young people ages 18 & under. The objectives of this motivated group are to promote pride of ownership of the registered American Quarter Horse and the development of leadership, dedication, self-reliance and sportsmanship. Many of our Youth members show towards year end awards or to vie for a spot on the coveted Congress and World Show Teams which have been very competitive in years past.

Scholarships

The Harriet Lynn Scholarship Fund is available to deserving individuals annually to provide assistance to further their education. Applications are available on the Youth Page.

Crisis Fund

The NCQHA Crisis Fund was established in 2002 to help NCQHA members with emergency disasters and situations as they arise. The Crisis Fund is supported solely by contributions from members and acquaintances and through the Silent Auction held at our annual year end banquet. Contributions to this fund are not tax deductible.
